Tom's Ship of Stories

A multi-sensory storytelling performance for children and young people with SEND

A collaboration the Horniman Museum, The National Martime Museum and local special schools. Funded by supported by public funding from Arts Council England.

The story, developed with the schools, tells of a 19th Century apprentice who gets a job on board a Tea Clipper on route to China and the performance included live music, sea shanties and many sensory and participatory elements.

The project included:

A teachers focus group to share ideas and decide theme and area of the museum to work in

Workshops in schools to explore the theme and techniques

Professional performance in the museums for the young people and local special schools

Very well thought through, addressing the auditory, sensory and visual needs of the audience.

The whole performance was fantastic, children were

extremely engaged.

Lovely to come to something that was pitched at just the right level.
